Foodie Friday, But On Tuesday

Ju-Boy, Chip and Shy-Boy are off together for a three-day bonding trip to Eilat.  I was invited to come along, but the lure of three boys (yes, Ju-Boy turns into an unruly teen on these trips) who didn’t bring enough underwear, the broiling desert heat and the ambiance of a hotel named La Playa (The Beach) that is nowhere near the beach (but has a great view of the airport runway) is underwhelming.  Didi and I will stay home and suffer the air conditioning and a selection of chick flicks.  And yes, take-away sushi for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We will have to just suffer through it somehow…

So while we plan for a lazy week with a girls’ night in tonight and maybe a girls’ night out tomorrow, check out what’s been floating around the foodie blogosphere lately:

Ari Cooks takes it one day at a time with Summer Noodles.

Baroness Tapuzina brings out the green-eyed monster in me, she took a trip to the gourmet Borough Market in London.

Over at Cafe Liz you can read about her dilemma with Steamed Okra, which solves one of my own dilemmas, and I’m going to be cooking okra her way from now on!

Cooking Manager has a wonderful recipe for Wilted Red Peppers with Garlic, so simple and delicious.  I tried it out the other night and have been wondering why I haven’t been making this for years already.  Perfect for a hot summer evening when you don’t want to heat up your kitchen.

Cooking Outside The Box has a daughter who prefers rice cakes to Jell-O, and yet she still made some, apparently for the first time since making aliyah.  Read all about her New Immigrant Moment.

Food Bridge is all about The Summer Guide to Having Fun.  I just want to know where she got that pile of balloons…

Back in the 70s I talked my mother into buying a Tupperware popsicle set.  We used it once, and then my brother took it to the sandbox and it was never seen again.  Healthy Food for Living has a great recipe for Melon Yogurt Popsicles, and some very cool popsicle molds as well.  Time for me to go shopping for a new set.

It’s Lunch Time at Hope It Will Rain.  Fresh carrots, tomatoes and onions over pasta, yum!

Mimi at Israeli Kitchen unfortunately did not tempt me with Lamb-Stuffed Mulberry Leaves.  I don’t have a mulberry bush, and I hate eating lamb, but Ju-Boy would be chalashing over this (too bad he’s in Eilat, he’s just going to have to chalash…).

The Gush Gourmet is tempting me with Zucchini-Blueberry Bread.  Where am I going to find fresh blueberries in Israel (without having to apply for a bank loan)?  Will have to make do with frozen… sigh…

Vegan Start has a recipe for Chocolate Chip Banana Bread.  I’ve been doing a lot of vegan baking lately, this one should be a great nosh for Shabbat morning.

Every now and then I come across something so grossly and comically spelled, I just have to take a picture.  Thankfully, A Time of the Signs is there to faithfully archive all funny typos.  See what I found at the supermarket the other day in Need A Decongestant?

Finally, if you’re like me, and have a one-track mind (it’s food, by the way, although Ju-Boy thinks it’s something else… sex him crocheting knitting), and can only think of history, philosophy, economics and everything else in terms of gastronomy, here’s the perfect historical depiction of American-centric warfare, as told through the foods of the countries of conflict.  A few weird things, though:  Israel is represented by matzah and bagels.  Matzah I can understand, but bagels?  That’s considered American food here in Israel.  Felafel, on the other hand, must be some kind of Muslim dish, since it’s the felafel balls that bring down the Twin Towers (of hamburgers), although nothing says Israel more to me than a felafel in pita.

What do you think of the film?

  1. Glad you enjoyed the recipe. So that explains Yosefa’s text message, asking me whether I’d ever made Osem Jello!

    • There was once some guy on the Eat-L list who considered himself a Jello maven and collected Jell-O from all over the world. I sent him some of the Osem stuff, he said it was lethal! Scary, actually, how it set even before he could get it into the fridge.

  2. Thanks for the link! I’m so happy to provide you with an outlet for your typos – keep them coming!
And by the way, I *love* sushi, and *strongly dislike* Finding Nemo, so you’d think that your photo at the top would be perfect for me… but – nasty!!

  7. Thanks for including me! Did you try the Frozen Chest Gooze? Last Saturday my husband read the instructions on the back of a cheap pin ball game my kids got as a party favor…Oh my! Something about it being an intelligence game for lovers. Interesting video. You might like this video http://nonrecipe.blogspot.com/2011/07/artist-video-food-about-you-by.html. It made me smile. A little lighter than your fighting food.
